In space, maintaining good nutrition isn’t just about calories—it’s about getting the right vitamins and nutrients over long missions. BioNutrients is a NASA-led experiment designed to test a novel solution: on-demand production of essential nutrients through engineered microbes.
Led by Frances Donovan at NASA Ames, the experiment examines whether beneficial nutrients like vitamin B12 can be produced and preserved efficiently aboard the ISS. Instead of flying up pre-packaged supplements—which degrade over time—astronauts can cultivate and extract them when needed.
BioNutrients uses special containers called BioNutrient production packs. Inside, carefully engineered microbes are triggered to grow and produce target nutrients when mixed with water. This concept supports deep space missions, where cargo space and shelf life are limited.
Students interested in synthetic biology, biomanufacturing, or sustainability will find BioNutrients exciting. It shows how biological engineering can meet human needs in extreme environments, from space stations to disaster zones on Earth.
