Led by Dr. Federica Brandizzi at Michigan State University, this research aimed to discover how plants adjust at a cellular and genetic level to the extreme conditions of space. The goal? To pave the way for sustainable farming in orbit and beyond.
Plants were flown to the International Space Station where they grew under constant light and microgravity. Researchers studied how these conditions affect plant structures, including cell walls, chloroplasts, and hormone signaling pathways. Changes in gene expression were also analyzed.
The results helped identify specific mechanisms that allow plants to survive in non-Earth environments. For example, some plants increased production of stress-response proteins, while others altered their internal timing systems to cope with space light cycles.
