Lighting plays a pivotal role in plant growth, and in space, choosing the right kind of light can make all the difference. The BRIC-LED Tech Demo, led by Dr. Howard Levine at NASA Kennedy Space Center, tested innovative LED lighting systems aboard Expeditions 53/54 of the International Space Station (ISS).

The objective was to determine how plants respond to different LED wavelengths in microgravity. Traditional lighting systems are bulky and energy-consuming. LEDs offer a lightweight, efficient alternative. This demonstration aimed to validate whether specific light colors—like red and blue—could support photosynthesis and growth as effectively in space as on Earth.

The tech demo used Arabidopsis plants as a model system, housed within BRIC canisters fitted with customized LED arrays. These LEDs simulated Earth-like light conditions in a compact design.

The results from the BRIC-LED Tech Demo provide guidance for future plant growth chambers aboard spacecraft, enabling the cultivation of crops during long-duration missions. The technology has also influenced Earth-based controlled-environment agriculture, like vertical farming.

This experiment is a step forward in our journey to grow sustainable food in space, ensuring astronaut health and mission success far from Earth.
