About

Every image you have seen from the Hubble or James Webb Space Telescope is the result of a decision: which data to show, which wavelengths to map to which colours, which patterns to highlight and which to suppress. Those decisions are made by scientists — and increasingly, by artificial intelligence. Modern space missions generate more data than any human team can read. The James Webb Space Telescope, ISRO's Earth observation satellites, and global telescope arrays produce measurements continuously, at volumes that make manual analysis impossible. AI has become the primary tool for finding patterns in this data - classifying galaxies, detecting planets, forecasting floods, tracking glaciers, and flagging discoveries buried in datasets too large for unaided human attention. This 10-hour certificate program explores the relationship between space science and artificial intelligence from the ground up. Learners will understand how AI is used across the full lifecycle of a space mission: from spacecraft design and trajectory optimisation, to real-time data processing, to the downstream applications that affect agriculture, disaster response, and climate policy for billions of people. The program combines concise theory modules with two hands-on interactive labs built on real astronomical data. In the Agnirva Space Sounds Lab, learners convert telescope images into sound, experiencing directly how AI interprets data not as images, but as patterns in numbers, translated across sensory channels to reveal structure that visual analysis alone might miss. In the Agnirva Space Colour Lab, learners construct false colour astronomical images by combining independent wavelength observations, making the same representation decisions that scientists make when producing iconic images from Hubble and JWST, and understanding why those decisions are scientific choices, not aesthetic ones. No prior knowledge of space or AI or coding is required.
