Grade Level:

Class 2

All STEM domains, Finance, Economics, Data Science, AI, Physics, Chemistry

Definition
What is it?

A Data Table is an organised way to show information using rows and columns. It helps us arrange numbers and words neatly so we can understand them easily. Think of it like a neatly arranged list with headings.

Simple Example
Quick Example

Imagine you want to keep track of how many runs your favourite cricket players scored in a match. You can make a data table with player names in one column and their scores in another. This makes it very easy to see who scored what.

Worked Example
Step-by-Step

Let's create a data table for fruits you bought from the market.

Step 1: Decide what information you want to show. We want to show the 'Fruit Name' and 'Quantity (in kg)'.
---
Step 2: Draw two columns. Label the first column 'Fruit Name' and the second column 'Quantity (in kg)'.
---
Step 3: Start filling in the rows. For the first row, write 'Apples' under 'Fruit Name' and '2' under 'Quantity (in kg)'.
---
Step 4: For the second row, write 'Bananas' under 'Fruit Name' and '3' under 'Quantity (in kg)'.
---
Step 5: For the third row, write 'Oranges' under 'Fruit Name' and '1' under 'Quantity (in kg)'.
---
Step 6: Your data table is ready! It clearly shows the fruits and their quantities.

Why It Matters

Data tables are super important in many fields! Doctors use them to track patient information, scientists use them to record experiment results, and even financial experts use them to manage money. Learning about data tables can open doors to careers in data analysis, finance, and research.

Common Mistakes

MISTAKE: Mixing up information in different columns, like putting the quantity of fruit under the 'Fruit Name' column. | CORRECTION: Always put the correct type of information under its specific column heading to keep the table clear.

MISTAKE: Not giving clear headings to columns. | CORRECTION: Always use clear and descriptive headings for each column so anyone can understand what information is in it.

MISTAKE: Writing all information in one long sentence instead of using rows and columns. | CORRECTION: Use separate rows for each item or entry, and separate columns for different types of details about that item. This makes the data much easier to read.

Practice Questions
Try It Yourself

Fill it as: Maths - 15, Science - 10, English - 8.

QUESTION: Your mom wants to know the price of different vegetables. If potatoes cost ₹30/kg, onions ₹40/kg, and tomatoes ₹50/kg, create a simple data table to show this. | ANSWER: Create two columns: 'Vegetable' and 'Price per kg'. Fill it as: Potatoes - ₹30, Onions - ₹40, Tomatoes - ₹50.

QUESTION: A small shop sells samosas for ₹15 each, pakoras for ₹20 per plate, and jalebis for ₹10 per piece. On a busy evening, they sold 50 samosas, 30 plates of pakoras, and 70 jalebis. Create a data table showing the item, its price, and the quantity sold. | ANSWER: Create three columns: 'Item', 'Price per Unit', and 'Quantity Sold'. Fill it as: Samosas - ₹15 - 50, Pakoras - ₹20 - 30, Jalebis - ₹10 - 70.

Real World Connection
In the Real World

When you check your mobile data usage on an app, the app often shows you a data table. It lists how much data you used each day, for which app, and how much is left. Even online shopping websites use data tables to show product features like size, colour, and price in an organised way.

Key Vocabulary
Key Terms

ROW: A horizontal line of entries in a table. | COLUMN: A vertical line of entries in a table. | HEADING: A title at the top of a column that tells you what information is below it. | DATA: Facts or information collected for analysis.

What's Next
What to Learn Next

Now that you understand data tables, you can explore how to read and interpret different types of data. Next, you can learn about 'Bar Graphs' and 'Pictographs' which are other visual ways to represent data, often created using information from data tables.
