What is a Decimal?

Grade Level:

Class 4

Maths, Finance, Science, Computing, AI, Data Science

Definition
What is it?

A decimal is a way to represent numbers that are not whole numbers. It uses a decimal point (.) to separate the whole part of a number from its fractional part, which shows parts smaller than one.

Simple Example
Quick Example

Imagine you bought a packet of biscuits for Rupees 15 and 50 paise. We write this as ₹15.50. Here, 15 is the whole number part (Rupees) and 50 is the decimal part (paise), separated by the decimal point.

Worked Example
Step-by-Step

Let's say you want to share a 1-liter bottle of juice equally among 4 friends.

1. First, we know 1 liter is a whole quantity.
2. To share it equally among 4 friends, each friend gets 1 divided by 4.
3. As a fraction, this is 1/4 liter.
4. To convert 1/4 to a decimal, we divide 1 by 4.
5. 1 ÷ 4 = 0.25
6. So, each friend gets 0.25 liters of juice.

Answer: 0.25 liters

Why It Matters

Decimals are super important in daily life and many big fields! They are used in finance for money calculations, in science for precise measurements, and in computing for data analysis. Understanding decimals can help you in careers like a financial analyst or a data scientist.

Common Mistakes

MISTAKE: Thinking 0.5 is bigger than 0.75 because 5 is bigger than 7. | CORRECTION: Compare digits place by place from left to right after the decimal point. 0.75 means 7 tenths and 5 hundredths, which is larger than 0.5 (5 tenths).

MISTAKE: Reading 3.45 as 'three point forty-five'. | CORRECTION: The digits after the decimal point are read individually. So, 3.45 is 'three point four five'.

MISTAKE: Adding 0.2 + 0.30 and getting 0.500. | CORRECTION: When adding decimals, align the decimal points. 0.2 is the same as 0.20. So, 0.20 + 0.30 = 0.50.
