What is a Description (as text)?

Grade Level:

Pre-School – Class 2

All domains without exception

Definition
What is it?

A description is a piece of writing that tells us what something or someone is like. It uses words to create a picture in our minds, helping us imagine details like how something looks, sounds, smells, tastes, or feels.

Simple Example
Quick Example

Imagine your favourite cricket bat. A description of it might say: 'My cricket bat is made of light brown wood, has a thick handle wrapped in blue tape, and feels heavy but balanced when I swing it.' This tells us about its colour, material, and how it feels.

Worked Example
Step-by-Step

Let's describe a typical school bus in India:

1. **Start with the main object:** It's a big, yellow school bus.
---
2. **Add details about its appearance:** It has black rubber tyres and many rectangular windows.
---
3. **Mention specific features:** On the side, it has 'SCHOOL BUS' written in big red letters. There's also a stop sign that swings out when children are getting on or off.
---
4. **Describe its sound/feel:** When it drives, it makes a rumbling sound, and inside, the seats are usually blue or green, made of hard plastic or sometimes padded with rexine. It often feels a bit bumpy on Indian roads.
---
5. **Summarise the overall impression:** This description helps someone who hasn't seen it imagine what the school bus looks and feels like.

Why It Matters

Descriptions are super important in every subject! In Science, you describe experiments; in Social Studies, you describe places or historical events. Even app developers and engineers use descriptions to explain how their products work or look. Clear descriptions help everyone understand exactly what you mean.

Common Mistakes

MISTAKE: Just naming something without adding details. E.g., 'It's a dog.' | CORRECTION: Add descriptive words. E.g., 'It's a small, fluffy white dog with pointy ears and a wagging tail.'

MISTAKE: Using very general words that don't paint a clear picture. E.g., 'The food was good.' | CORRECTION: Be specific with sensory details. E.g., 'The biryani was fragrant with spices, the rice was perfectly cooked, and the chicken was tender and juicy.'

MISTAKE: Mixing up facts with opinions when trying to describe objectively. E.g., 'The new smartphone is the best ever.' | CORRECTION: Stick to observable characteristics for a description. E.g., 'The new smartphone has a 6.5-inch screen, a triple camera setup, and a 5000 mAh battery.'

QUESTION: Describe the classroom you are currently in, focusing on what someone would see if they walked in. | ANSWER: My classroom has light blue walls and a white ceiling. There are twenty wooden desks arranged in rows, each with a matching chair. A large green blackboard is at the front, with a map of India hanging next to it.

QUESTION: Imagine you are describing your morning routine to a friend who lives in another city. Describe one specific part of it, like having breakfast or getting ready for school, in detail. | ANSWER: After I wake up, I go to the kitchen for breakfast. My mom usually makes idli and sambar. The idlis are soft, white, and steaming hot, and the sambar is a spicy, tangy, yellow lentil stew with vegetables like drumsticks and carrots. I dip the idlis into the sambar, and it's a delicious and filling start to my day.

Think about online shopping apps like Flipkart or Amazon. Every product, from a mobile phone to a pair of shoes, has a detailed description that tells you its size, colour, material, features, and how to use it.
