Grade Level:

Pre-School – Class 2

All domains without exception

Definition
What is it?

A fraction shows a part of a whole thing. It tells us how many pieces of a whole we have. For example, if you cut a pizza into equal slices, each slice is a fraction of the whole pizza.

Simple Example
Quick Example

Imagine you have a delicious gulab jamun, and you cut it into two equal pieces. If you eat one piece, you have eaten one-half of the gulab jamun. Here, 'one-half' is a fraction.

Worked Example
Step-by-Step

Let's say your mom made a paratha and cut it into 4 equal pieces for you and your siblings.
---
Step 1: The whole paratha is divided into 4 equal parts.
---
Step 2: You take 1 piece to eat.
---
Step 3: The part you took can be written as 1 (the number of pieces you have) over 4 (the total number of pieces).
---
Step 4: So, you have eaten 1/4 (one-fourth) of the paratha.
---
Answer: 1/4

Why It Matters

Common Mistakes

MISTAKE: Thinking the bottom number (denominator) tells you the number of parts you have. | CORRECTION: The bottom number (denominator) tells you the total number of equal parts the whole is divided into. The top number (numerator) tells you how many of those parts you have.

MISTAKE: Not dividing the whole into EQUAL parts when thinking about fractions. | CORRECTION: For something to be a true fraction, the whole must be divided into parts that are exactly the same size.

MISTAKE: Confusing the numerator and the denominator. | CORRECTION: Remember, 'N' for Numerator is 'North' (top), and 'D' for Denominator is 'Down' (bottom).
