Definition
What is it?

A percentage is a special way to show a part of a whole thing, where the whole is always considered to be 100. It tells you 'how many out of every hundred'. We use the symbol '%' to show a percentage.

Simple Example
Quick Example

Imagine your school has 100 students. If 60 of them are girls, we can say that 60% of the students are girls. This means 60 out of every 100 students are girls.

Worked Example
Step-by-Step

Let's say your favourite cricket team scored 200 runs. If a player, Virat, scored 50 runs, what percentage of the total runs did Virat score?

1. First, write the runs Virat scored as a fraction of the total runs: 50/200.
---
2. To change a fraction into a percentage, you need to multiply it by 100. So, (50/200) * 100.
---
3. Simplify the fraction: 50/200 can be simplified to 1/4.
---
4. Now, multiply 1/4 by 100: (1/4) * 100.
---
5. This gives you 100/4.
---
6. Divide 100 by 4: 100 ÷ 4 = 25.
---
7. So, Virat scored 25% of the total runs.

Answer: 25%

Why It Matters

Percentages help us compare things easily, like discounts in a shop or exam scores. In finance, they show interest rates, and in data science, they help understand survey results. Understanding percentages can even help you analyze cricket statistics or understand government reports.

Common Mistakes

MISTAKE: Forgetting to multiply by 100 when converting a fraction to a percentage. | CORRECTION: Always remember that after you make a fraction, you must multiply it by 100 to get the percentage.

MISTAKE: Confusing percentage with a normal fraction or decimal. | CORRECTION: A percentage is always 'out of 100'. So, 50% is 50/100, not just 50.

MISTAKE: Adding or subtracting percentages directly without finding the actual values. | CORRECTION: You cannot just add 10% + 20% to get 30% of different amounts. First, find the actual values that each percentage represents, then add or subtract those values.

What does 75% mean?

75 out of 10
