Grade Level:

Pre-School – Class 2

All domains without exception

Definition
What is it?

In a sentence, the predicate tells us what the subject is doing or what is being said about the subject. It always includes the main verb and all the words that describe the action or state of the subject. Think of it as the 'action part' or 'information part' of the sentence.

Simple Example
Quick Example

Imagine your friend, Rohan, is eating a samosa. In the sentence 'Rohan is eating a samosa,' 'Rohan' is the subject. What is Rohan doing? He 'is eating a samosa.' So, 'is eating a samosa' is the predicate.

Worked Example
Step-by-Step

Let's find the predicate in the sentence: 'The auto-rickshaw driver drove quickly.'

1. First, identify the subject. Who or what is the sentence about? The sentence is about 'The auto-rickshaw driver.' So, 'The auto-rickshaw driver' is our subject.
---
2. Next, ask yourself: What did the auto-rickshaw driver do? Or what is being said about him?
---
3. The sentence tells us he 'drove quickly.' This part includes the verb 'drove' and describes the action.
---
4. Therefore, 'drove quickly' is the predicate of the sentence.

Answer: The predicate is 'drove quickly'.

Common Mistakes

MISTAKE: Thinking the predicate is just the verb. | CORRECTION: The predicate includes the verb AND all the words that complete its meaning or describe the action.

MISTAKE: Confusing the subject with the predicate. | CORRECTION: The subject is who or what the sentence is about. The predicate tells what the subject does or is.

MISTAKE: Including the subject in the predicate. | CORRECTION: The predicate starts AFTER the complete subject. It never includes the subject itself.
