What is a Pronoun Case?

Grade Level:

Class 1

NLP, Law, History, Social Sciences, Literature, Journalism, Communication

Definition
What is it?

Pronoun case tells us how a pronoun is used in a sentence. It shows if the pronoun is doing the action (subject), receiving the action (object), or showing ownership (possessive). There are three main cases: Subjective, Objective, and Possessive.

Simple Example
Quick Example

Imagine you are talking about your friend, Rahul. If Rahul scores a goal in football, you say 'He scored a goal.' Here, 'He' is doing the action. If someone gives a medal to Rahul, you say 'They gave a medal to him.' Here, 'him' is receiving the action. The change from 'He' to 'him' is about pronoun case.

Worked Example
Step-by-Step

Let's find the correct pronoun case for a sentence.

Step 1: Identify the action in the sentence. 'Gita gave a book to ____.' The action is 'gave'.
---Step 2: Decide if the pronoun is doing the action, receiving the action, or showing ownership. The pronoun is receiving the book, so it's receiving the action.
---Step 3: Choose the correct pronoun case. For receiving the action, we use the Objective case.
---Step 4: Select the correct pronoun from options like 'she' (Subjective) or 'her' (Objective). Since it's Objective, we use 'her'.
---Answer: Gita gave a book to her.

Why It Matters

Understanding pronoun case helps you speak and write English correctly, which is vital in journalism, law, and communication. Clear writing ensures your message is understood, whether you're reporting news or drafting legal documents. This skill is crucial for anyone aspiring to careers in media, law, or public relations.

Common Mistakes

MISTAKE: Using 'Me and my friend went to the market.' | CORRECTION: 'My friend and I went to the market.' (When you are the subject, use 'I', not 'me'.)

MISTAKE: Saying 'Give the ball to I.' | CORRECTION: 'Give the ball to me.' (When you are the object, use 'me', not 'I'.)

MISTAKE: Writing 'The book is her's.' | CORRECTION: 'The book is hers.' (Possessive pronouns like 'hers', 'ours', 'yours' do not use an apostrophe.)

MCQ
Quick Quiz

Which sentence uses the pronoun 'them' correctly?

The gift was for they.

They gave the gift to them.

Them went to the park.

It was them who called.

The Correct Answer Is:

B

Option B is correct because 'them' is used as an object receiving the action. In options A, C, and D, 'them' is incorrectly used as a subject or after a preposition where a subjective pronoun might be needed.

Real World Connection
In the Real World

When you use a voice assistant like Google Assistant or Alexa, it understands your commands based on correct sentence structure, including pronoun case. If you say 'Call he' instead of 'Call him', the assistant might not understand.
