What is Addition?

Grade Level:

Pre-School – Class 2

All domains without exception

Definition
What is it?

Addition is the process of combining two or more numbers or quantities to find their total sum. It helps us figure out 'how many in all' when we put things together. The symbol for addition is '+', which we read as 'plus'.

Simple Example
Quick Example

Imagine you have 3 ladoos, and your friend gives you 2 more ladoos. To find out how many ladoos you have in total, you add them: 3 ladoos + 2 ladoos = 5 ladoos. You now have 5 ladoos altogether!

Worked Example
Step-by-Step

Let's add 15 and 23.

Step 1: Write the numbers one below the other, aligning the 'ones' place and the 'tens' place.
15
+ 23
----

Step 2: Start adding from the 'ones' place. Add 5 and 3.
5 + 3 = 8
Write 8 in the 'ones' place of the answer.
15
+ 23
----
8

Step 3: Now, add the 'tens' place. Add 1 and 2.
1 + 2 = 3
Write 3 in the 'tens' place of the answer.
15
+ 23
----
38

Answer: So, 15 + 23 = 38.

Why It Matters

Addition is a basic building block for almost all mathematics. It's crucial for understanding bigger concepts like multiplication, algebra, and even geometry. Engineers use it to calculate loads, shopkeepers use it to total bills, and even astronauts use it for rocket trajectories!

Common Mistakes

MISTAKE: Not aligning numbers by place value (ones under ones, tens under tens) when adding larger numbers. | CORRECTION: Always stack numbers carefully so that the ones digits are in one column, tens digits in another, and so on. This prevents errors, especially with carrying over.

MISTAKE: Forgetting to 'carry over' when the sum of a column is 10 or more. For example, in 7+5=12, writing '12' in the ones place. | CORRECTION: When a sum is 10 or more, write down the ones digit (e.g., '2' from '12') and carry over the tens digit (e.g., '1' from '12') to the next column on the left.

MISTAKE: Adding numbers from left to right instead of right to left (starting from the ones place). | CORRECTION: Always start adding from the rightmost column (the ones place) and move towards the left. This ensures correct carrying over and accurate results.

QUESTION: What is 7 + 4? | ANSWER: 11

QUESTION: A bus picked up 18 passengers from one stop and 11 more from the next stop. How many passengers are on the bus in total? | ANSWER: 29 passengers

QUESTION: Reena bought a book for Rs 85 and a pen for Rs 12. She also bought a snack for Rs 20. How much money did she spend in total? | ANSWER: Rs 117

MCQ
Quick Quiz

Which of these situations requires addition?

Finding how much money is left after buying something

Sharing 10 sweets equally among 2 friends

Calculating the total score of two cricket innings

Finding the difference in height between two buildings

The Correct Answer Is:

C

Option C requires combining the scores from two innings to find a total, which is what addition does. Options A, B, and D involve subtraction, division, and subtraction respectively.

Real World Connection
In the Real World

Every time you check your mobile data usage, the app adds up all the data you've used from different sessions. When you make a bill payment using UPI, the bank's system adds up all your expenses to show your total spending. Even when a cricket commentator gives the total runs scored, they're using addition!

Key Vocabulary
Key Terms

ADDEND: A number that is added to another number. | SUM: The total result obtained when two or more numbers are added together. | PLUS: The symbol (+) used to indicate addition. | TOTAL: The complete amount or number of something. | CARRY OVER: The process of moving a digit from one place value column to the next higher place value column when the sum exceeds 9.

What's Next
What to Learn Next

Now that you understand addition, the next step is to learn about Subtraction. Subtraction is the opposite of addition, helping you find out 'how much is left' or 'the difference between' two numbers. You're doing great!
