What is Arranging by Quantity?

Grade Level:

Pre-School – Class 2

All domains without exception

Definition
What is it?

Arranging by Quantity means putting things in a specific order based on how many of them there are, or how much of something there is. We can arrange items from the smallest quantity to the largest (increasing order) or from the largest quantity to the smallest (decreasing order).

Simple Example
Quick Example

Imagine you have 5 laddoos, your friend has 3 laddoos, and your sister has 7 laddoos. If you arrange them from who has the fewest to who has the most, it would be: Friend (3), You (5), Sister (7). This is arranging by quantity.

Worked Example
Step-by-Step

Let's arrange the number of runs scored by different cricketers in a match: Rohit (65 runs), Virat (92 runs), KL Rahul (48 runs), Surya (75 runs). We want to arrange them from the highest runs to the lowest runs.

1. First, list all the quantities: 65, 92, 48, 75.
---
2. Identify the largest quantity: 92 (Virat).
---
3. From the remaining quantities (65, 48, 75), identify the next largest: 75 (Surya).
---
4. From the remaining quantities (65, 48), identify the next largest: 65 (Rohit).
---
5. The last remaining quantity is 48 (KL Rahul).
---
6. So, arranging from highest to lowest runs: Virat (92), Surya (75), Rohit (65), KL Rahul (48).

Answer: Virat (92), Surya (75), Rohit (65), KL Rahul (48).

Why It Matters

Arranging by quantity helps us compare things easily and make quick decisions. It's crucial in fields like business for understanding sales, in science for organizing data, and even in daily life for managing your pocket money or arranging books on a shelf. This skill is fundamental for data analysis and problem-solving.

Common Mistakes

MISTAKE: Mixing up increasing and decreasing order. Forgetting whether to go from smallest to largest or largest to smallest. | CORRECTION: Always read the question carefully to know if you need 'ascending' (smallest to largest) or 'descending' (largest to smallest) order. A trick is 'A' for Ascending, 'A' for 'Aage badho' (move forward/up).

MISTAKE: Missing one of the items or quantities while arranging. | CORRECTION: Always count the total number of items given in the question and make sure you have arranged all of them in your final answer.

MISTAKE: Incorrectly comparing numbers, especially with different digit counts (e.g., thinking 9 is larger than 12). | CORRECTION: When comparing numbers, always start from the leftmost digit. If numbers have different digit counts, the one with more digits is usually larger (e.g., 100 is larger than 99).

Practice Questions
Try It Yourself

QUESTION: Arrange these daily sales figures for a chai shop from smallest to largest: Monday (Rs. 500), Tuesday (Rs. 750), Wednesday (Rs. 300). | ANSWER: Wednesday (Rs. 300), Monday (Rs. 500), Tuesday (Rs. 750)

QUESTION: Your mobile data usage for the last four months was: 1.5 GB, 2.3 GB, 0.8 GB, 1.9 GB. Arrange these from highest usage to lowest usage. | ANSWER: 2.3 GB, 1.9 GB, 1.5 GB, 0.8 GB

QUESTION: Five friends collected coins: Amit has 25 coins, Priya has 32 coins, Rohan has 18 coins, Sneha has 25 coins, and Vivek has 40 coins. Arrange their names in order from who has the most coins to who has the fewest. If two friends have the same number, list them alphabetically. | ANSWER: Vivek (40), Priya (32), Amit (25), Sneha (25), Rohan (18)

MCQ
Quick Quiz

Which of these shows quantities arranged in decreasing order?

5, 10, 15, 20

20, 15, 10, 5

5, 15, 10, 20

10, 20, 5, 15

The Correct Answer Is:

B

Decreasing order means arranging from the largest quantity to the smallest. Option B (20, 15, 10, 5) correctly shows this sequence. The other options are either increasing or not in a specific order.

Real World Connection
In the Real World

When you check prices for groceries on apps like Blinkit or Zepto, the app often lets you sort items by 'price: low to high' or 'price: high to low'. This is arranging by quantity (price). Similarly, when you check cricket match scores, players are often listed by runs scored, from highest to lowest.

Great job understanding how to arrange by quantity! Next, you can explore comparing quantities using symbols like greater than (>) and less than (<). This will help you formalize your comparisons and understand relationships between different amounts even better.
