What is Arranging Numbers?

Grade Level:

Pre-School – Class 2

All domains without exception

Definition
What is it?

Arranging numbers means putting them in a specific order. We can arrange numbers from smallest to biggest, which is called ascending order, or from biggest to smallest, which is called descending order. This helps us make sense of data and compare values easily.

Simple Example
Quick Example

Imagine you and your friends scored marks in a science test: Rohan got 75, Priya got 90, and Amit got 60. To see who scored highest, you would arrange their marks. In ascending order, it would be 60 (Amit), 75 (Rohan), 90 (Priya). In descending order, it would be 90 (Priya), 75 (Rohan), 60 (Amit).

Worked Example
Step-by-Step

Let's arrange the following numbers in ascending order: 45, 12, 78, 30, 65.

Step 1: Look at all the numbers and find the smallest one. The smallest number is 12.
---
Step 2: Now, from the remaining numbers (45, 78, 30, 65), find the next smallest. That is 30.
---
Step 3: From the remaining numbers (45, 78, 65), find the next smallest. That is 45.
---
Step 4: From the remaining numbers (78, 65), find the next smallest. That is 65.
---
Step 5: The last number left is 78, which is the largest.
---
Answer: So, the numbers arranged in ascending order are: 12, 30, 45, 65, 78.

Why It Matters

Arranging numbers is a fundamental skill in mathematics that helps us compare, analyze, and understand data. It's crucial for careers like data analysis, finance, and even sports statistics, where you need to quickly sort information to make decisions. Learning this helps you organize information in a logical way.

Common Mistakes

MISTAKE: Confusing ascending and descending order. Students often arrange from smallest to biggest when asked for biggest to smallest. | CORRECTION: Always double-check whether the question asks for ascending (smallest to biggest, like climbing stairs) or descending (biggest to smallest, like coming down stairs).

MISTAKE: Missing a number or repeating a number when arranging. | CORRECTION: After arranging, count the numbers in your original list and your arranged list to ensure they match. Cross off numbers as you place them.

MISTAKE: Incorrectly comparing numbers with different numbers of digits (e.g., thinking 99 is bigger than 100). | CORRECTION: When comparing numbers, first look at the number of digits. A number with more digits is usually larger (e.g., 100 has 3 digits, 99 has 2 digits, so 100 > 99). If they have the same number of digits, compare from the leftmost digit.

Practice Questions
Try It Yourself

QUESTION: Arrange the following prices of vegetables in ascending order: Rs 25, Rs 10, Rs 40, Rs 15. | ANSWER: Rs 10, Rs 15, Rs 25, Rs 40

QUESTION: Your mobile data usage for the last five months (in GB) was: 12, 15, 9, 18, 11. Arrange these in descending order. | ANSWER: 18, 15, 12, 11, 9

QUESTION: A cricket team scored runs in five matches: 180, 210, 155, 195, 210. Arrange these scores in ascending order and then identify the highest score. | ANSWER: Ascending order: 155, 180, 195, 210, 210. Highest score: 210.

MCQ
Quick Quiz

Which of the following sets of numbers is arranged in descending order?

10, 20, 30, 40

50, 45, 40, 35

15, 25, 5, 30

5, 10, 20, 15

The Correct Answer Is:

B

Descending order means arranging numbers from the biggest to the smallest. Option B (50, 45, 40, 35) correctly shows numbers decreasing in value. The other options show either ascending order or a mixed order.

Real World Connection
In the Real World

When you use an e-commerce app like Flipkart or Amazon, you often sort products by 'Price: Low to High' or 'Price: High to Low'. This uses the concept of arranging numbers in ascending or descending order. Similarly, when a teacher sorts student marks to prepare a merit list, they are arranging numbers.

Key Vocabulary
Key Terms

ASCENDING ORDER: Arranging numbers from smallest to biggest | DESCENDING ORDER: Arranging numbers from biggest to smallest | COMPARE: To check how numbers are similar or different in value | SEQUENCE: A set of numbers following a particular order
