What is Counting by Sixes?

Grade Level:

Pre-School – Class 2

All domains without exception

Definition
What is it?

Counting by sixes means adding the number 6 repeatedly to a starting number. It helps us find numbers that are multiples of 6 quickly. This is also called skip counting by sixes.

Simple Example
Quick Example

Imagine you are buying ladoos for a festival, and each box has exactly 6 ladoos. If you buy one box, you have 6 ladoos. If you buy another box, you add 6 more, so you have 12 ladoos. You are counting by sixes to find the total.

Worked Example
Step-by-Step

Let's count by sixes starting from 0, up to 30.

Step 1: Start with 0.
---
Step 2: Add 6 to the starting number. So, 0 + 6 = 6.
---
Step 3: Add 6 to the new number. So, 6 + 6 = 12.
---
Step 4: Add 6 to the new number. So, 12 + 6 = 18.
---
Step 5: Add 6 to the new number. So, 18 + 6 = 24.
---
Step 6: Add 6 to the new number. So, 24 + 6 = 30.

So, counting by sixes from 0 up to 30 gives us: 0, 6, 12, 18, 24, 30.

Why It Matters

Counting by sixes is a basic skill that builds a strong foundation for multiplication and understanding number patterns. It's useful in careers like event planning (calculating seating arrangements), manufacturing (counting items in batches), and even in computer programming for creating sequences.

Common Mistakes

MISTAKE: Adding a different number instead of 6 each time. For example, 6, 12, 17, 22... | CORRECTION: Always add exactly 6 to the previous number to keep the pattern consistent.

MISTAKE: Forgetting to add the starting number if it's not 0. For example, starting from 3, a student might write 6, 12, 18... | CORRECTION: If starting from 3, the sequence should be 3, 9, 15, 21... (3+6=9, 9+6=15, etc.)

MISTAKE: Skipping numbers or repeating numbers in the sequence. For example, 6, 12, 18, 18, 24... | CORRECTION: Each number in the sequence must be exactly 6 more than the one before it, without skips or repeats.

Practice Questions
Try It Yourself

QUESTION: Count by sixes, starting from 0, until you reach 42. | ANSWER: 0, 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42

QUESTION: If a tailor stitches 6 shirts every day, how many shirts will he stitch in 5 days? (Count by sixes to find out) | ANSWER: Day 1: 6, Day 2: 12, Day 3: 18, Day 4: 24, Day 5: 30 shirts.

QUESTION: Starting from 10, count by sixes and write down the first 4 numbers in the sequence. | ANSWER: 10, 16, 22, 28

MCQ
Quick Quiz

Which of these sequences shows counting by sixes starting from 1?

1, 7, 13, 19

1, 6, 11, 16

1, 8, 15, 22

1, 7, 14, 21

The Correct Answer Is:

A

Option A is correct because each number is 6 more than the previous one (1+6=7, 7+6=13, 13+6=19). The other options do not consistently add 6.

Real World Connection
In the Real World

In a factory that packs samosas, they might pack them in trays of 6. To quickly find out how many samosas are in 7 trays, workers can count by sixes (6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42). This helps in managing inventory and fulfilling orders efficiently, just like in logistics and supply chain management.

Key Vocabulary
Key Terms

COUNTING: Finding the total number of items or steps | SKIP COUNTING: Counting by a number other than one, repeatedly adding the same number | MULTIPLE: A number that can be divided by another number without a remainder | SEQUENCE: A set of numbers arranged in a particular order or pattern
