What is Descending Order?

Grade Level:

Class 1

Maths, Computing, Data Science

Definition
What is it?

Descending order means arranging things from the largest (biggest) to the smallest. Think of it like coming down a staircase, starting from the top step and moving downwards. The numbers or items keep getting smaller as you go.

Simple Example
Quick Example

Imagine your cricket team's scores in 5 matches: 85, 120, 90, 150, 100. To arrange these scores in descending order, we start with the highest score and go down to the lowest. So, it would be 150, 120, 100, 90, 85.

Worked Example
Step-by-Step

Let's arrange the prices of 5 different ice cream flavours in descending order: Rs 60, Rs 45, Rs 75, Rs 50, Rs 80.

Step 1: Find the largest number among Rs 60, Rs 45, Rs 75, Rs 50, Rs 80. The largest is Rs 80.

---Step 2: Now, look at the remaining numbers: Rs 60, Rs 45, Rs 75, Rs 50. The largest among these is Rs 75.

---Step 3: Next, from Rs 60, Rs 45, Rs 50, the largest is Rs 60.

---Step 4: From the remaining Rs 45, Rs 50, the largest is Rs 50.

---Step 5: The last remaining number is Rs 45.

---Answer: So, the ice cream prices in descending order are: Rs 80, Rs 75, Rs 60, Rs 50, Rs 45.

Why It Matters

Understanding descending order is crucial for organizing data efficiently in Maths and Computing. Data scientists use it to quickly find top performers or highest values, like the highest-selling products or the fastest runners. It helps in making sense of large amounts of information quickly.

Common Mistakes

MISTAKE: Arranging numbers from smallest to largest instead of largest to smallest. For example, writing 10, 20, 30 for descending order. | CORRECTION: Always start with the biggest number and end with the smallest. Descending means 'going down'.

MISTAKE: Missing a number or repeating a number when arranging a list. For example, arranging 5, 2, 8, 3 as 8, 5, 2. (Missing 3). | CORRECTION: Double-check your list after arranging to ensure all original numbers are present and no number is repeated.

MISTAKE: Getting confused with negative numbers. For example, thinking -5 is larger than -2. | CORRECTION: Remember that for negative numbers, the number closer to zero is larger. So, -2 is larger than -5. The descending order for -2, -5, -1 would be -1, -2, -5.

Practice Questions
Try It Yourself

QUESTION: Arrange the following numbers in descending order: 15, 7, 20, 3, 10. | ANSWER: 20, 15, 10, 7, 3

QUESTION: The marks of 5 students in a Science test are: 78, 92, 65, 89, 72. Arrange these marks in descending order. | ANSWER: 92, 89, 78, 72, 65

QUESTION: Arrange the following temperatures (in Celsius) from highest to lowest: -5, 10, 0, -2, 7. | ANSWER: 10, 7, 0, -2, -5

MCQ
Quick Quiz

Which of the following lists shows numbers arranged in descending order?

1, 5, 9, 12

15, 10, 5, 0

3, 6, 9, 12

20, 25, 30, 35

The Correct Answer Is:

B

Option B (15, 10, 5, 0) correctly shows numbers decreasing from largest to smallest. Options A, C, and D all show numbers increasing, which is ascending order.

Real World Connection
In the Real World

When you look at a leader board in a mobile game, the players are usually listed in descending order of their scores, with the highest score at the top. Similarly, when you filter products by 'Price: High to Low' on an e-commerce app like Flipkart or Amazon, the products are displayed in descending order of their prices.

Key Vocabulary
Key Terms

DESCENDING: Going from largest to smallest | ORDER: A specific arrangement of things | LARGEST: The biggest value | SMALLEST: The least value | ARRANGE: To put into a particular order

What to Learn Next

Now that you understand descending order, you should learn about 'Ascending Order'. It's the opposite of descending order and knowing both will help you arrange numbers and data in any way you need, which is a fundamental skill in all areas of math and computing.
