What is Duration of Time?

Grade Level:

Class 2

All STEM domains, Finance, Economics, Data Science, AI, Physics, Chemistry

Definition
What is it?

Duration of time is simply the amount of time that passes from one point to another. It tells us how long an event or activity lasts. We calculate it by finding the difference between the start time and the end time.

Simple Example
Quick Example

Imagine you start watching a cricket match at 10:00 AM and it finishes at 1:00 PM. The duration of the match is 3 hours because 3 hours passed between 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM.

Worked Example
Step-by-Step

Rani started studying for her science test at 6:30 PM and finished at 8:00 PM. How long did she study?

1. Identify the start time: 6:30 PM
---2. Identify the end time: 8:00 PM
---3. Count the full hours from the start time: From 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM is 1 hour.
---4. Count the remaining minutes: From 7:30 PM to 8:00 PM is 30 minutes.
---5. Add the hours and minutes: 1 hour + 30 minutes = 1 hour 30 minutes.
---Answer: Rani studied for 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Why It Matters

Understanding duration is super important in many fields! Scientists use it to time experiments, engineers use it to plan project timelines, and even doctors use it to schedule appointments. It's key for managing time and resources in careers like project management, logistics, and event planning.

Common Mistakes

MISTAKE: Simply subtracting the numbers without considering minutes and hours separately. For example, 8:00 - 6:30 = 1:70. | CORRECTION: Always think about how many minutes are in an hour (60 minutes) and borrow/carry correctly when calculating duration.

MISTAKE: Getting confused between AM and PM, especially when an event crosses noon or midnight. | CORRECTION: Clearly note if times are AM or PM. If an event crosses midnight, you might need to calculate duration in two parts (e.g., till midnight, then after midnight).

MISTAKE: Forgetting to convert minutes when the difference is more than 60 minutes (e.g., saying 1 hour 70 minutes instead of 2 hours 10 minutes). | CORRECTION: Always simplify the minutes part of your answer. If minutes are 60 or more, convert 60 minutes into 1 hour and add it to the hour count.

Practice Questions
Try It Yourself

QUESTION: A bus left the station at 7:15 AM and reached its destination at 9:00 AM. What was the duration of the journey? | ANSWER: 1 hour 45 minutes

QUESTION: My favorite TV show starts at 5:45 PM and ends at 6:20 PM. How long is the show? | ANSWER: 35 minutes

QUESTION: A train journey began at 10:40 PM on Monday and ended at 1:10 AM on Tuesday. What was the total duration of the journey? | ANSWER: 2 hours 30 minutes

MCQ
Quick Quiz

What is the duration between 2:10 PM and 3:50 PM?

1 hour 30 minutes

1 hour 40 minutes

1 hour 50 minutes

2 hours 10 minutes

The Correct Answer Is:

B

From 2:10 PM to 3:10 PM is 1 hour. From 3:10 PM to 3:50 PM is 40 minutes. So, the total duration is 1 hour 40 minutes.

Real World Connection
In the Real World

When you book a movie ticket online, the app shows you the 'running time' of the film, which is its duration. Similarly, when you order food on Zomato or Swiggy, the estimated delivery time helps you calculate how long you need to wait, which is also a duration.

Key Vocabulary
Key Terms

DURATION: The length of time that something lasts | START TIME: The moment an event begins | END TIME: The moment an event finishes | ELAPSED TIME: Another term for duration of time
