What is Part?

Grade Level:

Pre-School – Class 2

All domains without exception

Definition
What is it?

A 'part' is a piece or a section of a larger whole. It means a fraction or a portion of something bigger. When you divide something, each piece you get is a part.

Simple Example
Quick Example

Imagine you have a full plate of delicious samosas, and there are 10 samosas in total. If you eat 2 samosas, those 2 samosas are a 'part' of the original 10 samosas. The remaining 8 samosas are also a part.

Worked Example
Step-by-Step

Let's say your mom gives you a big bar of chocolate with 12 squares.
---Step 1: The 'whole' is the entire chocolate bar with 12 squares.
---Step 2: You decide to eat 3 squares of chocolate.
---Step 3: These 3 squares are a 'part' of the whole chocolate bar.
---Step 4: The remaining 9 squares are also a 'part' of the original bar.
---Answer: 3 squares is a part, and 9 squares is another part of the 12-square chocolate bar.

Why It Matters

Understanding 'parts' is super important in maths, science, and even daily life! It helps us divide things fairly, understand fractions, and calculate percentages. Engineers use it to design machines, and doctors use it to measure medicine doses.

Common Mistakes

MISTAKE: Thinking a 'part' is always a small piece. | CORRECTION: A part can be small or large, as long as it's not the entire whole. For example, 9 out of 10 items is still a 'part', even if it's most of the whole.

MISTAKE: Confusing 'part' with 'whole'. | CORRECTION: The 'whole' is the complete item or group, while a 'part' is just a section or piece taken from that whole.

MISTAKE: Believing that parts must always be equal. | CORRECTION: Parts can be unequal. For example, if you break a stick, one piece might be longer than the other, but both are still parts of the original stick.

Practice Questions
Try It Yourself

QUESTION: Your school has 500 students. If 200 students are girls, what 'part' of the total students are girls? | ANSWER: 200 students are girls.

QUESTION: A pizza has 8 slices. If your friend eats 3 slices and you eat 2 slices, how many slices (what 'part') are left? | ANSWER: 3 slices are left.

QUESTION: You have Rs. 100. You spend Rs. 40 on a book and Rs. 25 on snacks. What 'part' of your money did you spend in total, and what 'part' is left? | ANSWER: Spent part = Rs. 65 (Rs. 40 + Rs. 25). Left part = Rs. 35 (Rs. 100 - Rs. 65).

MCQ
Quick Quiz

Which of these best describes a 'part'?

The entire thing

A piece or section of a whole

Something that is always very small

Only equal pieces

The Correct Answer Is:

B

Option B correctly defines a 'part' as a piece or section of a larger whole. Options A, C, and D are incorrect because a part is not the entire thing, can be large or small, and doesn't have to be equal.

Real World Connection
In the Real World

When you check your mobile data plan, you see how much data you've used (a 'part') out of your total monthly allowance (the 'whole'). Similarly, when a chef prepares a dish, they use specific 'parts' of different ingredients to make the complete meal.

Key Vocabulary
Key Terms

WHOLE: The complete item or amount | FRACTION: A part of a whole expressed mathematically | PORTION: A share or part of a whole | SECTION: A distinct part of a larger thing

What to Learn Next

Now that you understand what a 'part' is, you're ready to learn about 'fractions'. Fractions help us describe parts of a whole using numbers, which is super useful in many maths problems!
