Grade Level:

Pre-School – Class 2

All domains without exception

Definition
What is it?

Putting numbers together, also known as addition, means combining two or more numbers to find their total sum. It helps us figure out how much we have when we combine different quantities.

Simple Example
Quick Example

Imagine you have 3 ladoos in one box and your friend gives you 2 more ladoos. If you put them all together, how many ladoos do you have in total? You have 5 ladoos.

Worked Example
Step-by-Step

Let's say you scored 15 runs in the first over of a cricket match and 12 runs in the second over. How many runs did you score in total?

Step 1: Write down the numbers you need to add: 15 and 12.
---
Step 2: Line up the numbers according to their place values (ones under ones, tens under tens):
15
+ 12
-----
---
Step 3: Start adding from the rightmost column (the ones place). 5 + 2 = 7. Write 7 in the ones place of the answer.
15
+ 12
-----
7
---
Step 4: Now add the numbers in the tens place. 1 + 1 = 2. Write 2 in the tens place of the answer.
15
+ 12
-----
27
---
Answer: You scored a total of 27 runs.

Why It Matters

Understanding how to put numbers together is a fundamental skill in mathematics and daily life. It's crucial for careers like being a shopkeeper calculating daily sales, an engineer designing structures, or even a chef measuring ingredients for a recipe.

Common Mistakes

MISTAKE: Adding numbers from left to right instead of right to left, especially with carrying over. | CORRECTION: Always start adding from the ones place (the rightmost digit) and move towards the left.

MISTAKE: Forgetting to carry over a ten (or hundred, etc.) to the next place value when the sum of a column is 10 or more. | CORRECTION: If the sum of a column is 10 or more, write down the ones digit and carry over the tens digit to the next column on the left.

MISTAKE: Not aligning numbers correctly by place value when adding larger numbers. | CORRECTION: Always line up the ones digits, tens digits, hundreds digits, and so on, in vertical columns before adding.

The Correct Answer Is:

B

In the Real World

Every time you check your mobile data usage, calculate the total bill for groceries at a kirana store, or add up your marks from different subjects to find your total score, you are putting numbers together. Even apps like UPI use this concept to total up transaction amounts.

Now that you understand how to put numbers together, you're ready to learn about 'Taking Numbers Apart' (subtraction). Subtraction is the opposite of addition and helps us find the difference between numbers or how much is left.
