What is Sensitivity Analysis?

Grade Level:

Class 8

AI/ML, Data Science, Research, Journalism, Law, any domain requiring critical thinking

Definition
What is it?

Sensitivity Analysis helps us understand how the output or result of something changes when we change one small input. It's like checking which ingredient in a recipe makes the biggest difference to the final taste. It helps us find out which factors are most important.

Simple Example
Quick Example

Imagine you're making a budget for your pocket money. You want to save ₹500 a month. If you increase your daily chai expense by ₹10, how much less will you save? If you reduce your mobile data usage, how much more can you save? Sensitivity analysis helps you see which change has the biggest effect on your savings goal.

Worked Example
Step-by-Step

Let's say you're planning a trip to your Nani's house. The total cost depends on 3 things: bus fare, food, and gifts. --- Step 1: Initial Plan: Bus fare = ₹300, Food = ₹200, Gifts = ₹100. Total Cost = ₹300 + ₹200 + ₹100 = ₹600. --- Step 2: Change Bus Fare: What if bus fare increases by ₹50? New Bus fare = ₹350. Total Cost = ₹350 + ₹200 + ₹100 = ₹650. (Cost increased by ₹50) --- Step 3: Change Food Cost: Go back to initial plan. What if food cost increases by ₹50? New Food = ₹250. Total Cost = ₹300 + ₹250 + ₹100 = ₹650. (Cost increased by ₹50) --- Step 4: Change Gift Cost: Go back to initial plan. What if gift cost increases by ₹50? New Gifts = ₹150. Total Cost = ₹300 + ₹200 + ₹150 = ₹650. (Cost increased by ₹50) --- In this case, changing any one cost by ₹50 increases the total cost by ₹50. So, all factors have the same 'sensitivity' to a ₹50 change. If one factor caused a much bigger change, that would be the most 'sensitive' factor. --- ANSWER: All three factors (bus fare, food, gifts) have the same sensitivity in this example when changed by ₹50.

Why It Matters

Sensitivity Analysis is used by scientists, business leaders, and even journalists to make better decisions. In AI/ML, it helps understand which data points influence a model's prediction the most. In research, it helps identify key variables. It's a powerful tool for anyone wanting to understand 'what if' scenarios and make smart choices.

Common Mistakes

MISTAKE: Changing multiple inputs at once to see the effect | CORRECTION: In Sensitivity Analysis, you typically change ONLY ONE input at a time to clearly see its individual impact on the output.

MISTAKE: Not defining the 'output' or 'result' you are trying to analyze | CORRECTION: Always clearly state what you are trying to measure (e.g., total cost, profit, exam score) before starting the analysis.

MISTAKE: Thinking that a small change in an input will always lead to a small change in the output | CORRECTION: Sensitivity Analysis helps you discover if even a small change in one input can cause a HUGE change in the output, making that input very 'sensitive'.

Practice Questions
Try It Yourself

QUESTION: You are calculating the total marks for your exam. Your marks are: Maths (50), Science (40), English (30). If your Maths marks increase by 5, what is the new total? | ANSWER: New Total = (50+5) + 40 + 30 = 55 + 40 + 30 = 125. (Initial Total = 120, so total increased by 5)

QUESTION: A small business sells samosas. Each samosa costs ₹10 to make and sells for ₹20. They sell 100 samosas a day. What is their daily profit? Now, if the cost to make each samosa increases by ₹2, what is the new daily profit? How much did the profit change? | ANSWER: Initial Profit = (₹20 - ₹10) * 100 = ₹10 * 100 = ₹1000. New Cost = ₹10 + ₹2 = ₹12. New Profit = (₹20 - ₹12) * 100 = ₹8 * 100 = ₹800. Profit decreased by ₹200.

QUESTION: You are planning a school picnic. The total cost is ₹10,000. This includes Bus (₹4000), Food (₹3000), and Entry Tickets (₹3000). If the bus fare increases by 10%, how much does the total cost increase? If the food cost increases by 10%, how much does the total cost increase? Which factor (bus or food) has a greater impact on the total cost for a 10% increase? | ANSWER: Initial Total Cost = ₹10,000. --- Bus fare increase: 10% of ₹4000 = ₹400. New Total Cost = ₹10,000 + ₹400 = ₹10,400. (Increase of ₹400) --- Food cost increase: 10% of ₹3000 = ₹300. New Total Cost = ₹10,000 + ₹300 = ₹10,300. (Increase of ₹300) --- The bus fare has a greater impact (₹400 vs ₹300) for a 10% increase.

MCQ
Quick Quiz

What is the main purpose of Sensitivity Analysis?

To make all inputs equal

To see how changing one input affects the output

To only focus on the output

To predict the future with 100% accuracy

The Correct Answer Is:

B

Sensitivity Analysis is all about understanding the relationship between inputs and outputs by systematically changing one input at a time. It helps identify critical factors, not make inputs equal or predict perfectly.

Real World Connection
In the Real World

Imagine a farmer deciding which crop to grow. They can use Sensitivity Analysis to see how changes in rainfall, fertilizer price, or market selling price for their crop would affect their profit. This helps them make smart choices for their livelihood, much like how data scientists at companies like Zomato might analyze how a small change in delivery time impacts customer satisfaction.

Key Vocabulary
Key Terms

INPUT: A factor or variable that goes into a system or calculation | OUTPUT: The result or outcome produced by a system or calculation | SENSITIVE: Describes an input that causes a significant change in the output even with a small adjustment | VARIABLE: Any factor, trait, or condition that can exist in different amounts or types | SCENARIO: A possible sequence of events or a 'what if' situation
