What is Taking (Logic Primitive)?

Grade Level:

Pre-School – Class 2

All domains without exception

Definition
What is it?

Taking, in simple terms, means removing a certain number or quantity from another larger number or quantity. It helps us find out how much is left after something is removed. This is also known as subtraction.

Simple Example
Quick Example

Imagine you have 10 laddoos for your birthday. If your friend eats 3 laddoos, taking means removing those 3 laddoos from your total. You want to find out how many laddoos are left.

Worked Example
Step-by-Step

Let's say you started with 15 cricket balls. You gave 7 cricket balls to your younger brother.
---
Step 1: Identify the starting quantity: 15 cricket balls.
---
Step 2: Identify the quantity being taken away: 7 cricket balls.
---
Step 3: Perform the subtraction: 15 - 7.
---
Step 4: Calculate the result.
---
Answer: You are left with 8 cricket balls.

Why It Matters

Understanding 'taking' is super important for everyday life and many subjects. It's used in managing your pocket money, calculating changes in temperature, or even figuring out how much time is left for your favourite TV show. Engineers use it to design bridges and astronauts use it to plan space missions!

Common Mistakes

MISTAKE: Subtracting the smaller number from the larger number when the larger number is the one being taken away from. For example, in 'you had 5 apples and gave 2 away', writing 2 - 5. | CORRECTION: Always subtract the quantity being removed FROM the original quantity. So, it should be 5 - 2.

MISTAKE: Forgetting to borrow when a digit in the top number is smaller than the digit below it. For example, in 42 - 15, directly subtracting 5 from 2 to get -3. | CORRECTION: When a digit in the top number is smaller, you need to 'borrow' from the digit to its left. So, 2 becomes 12 (by borrowing 1 from 4, which becomes 3), then 12 - 5 = 7.

MISTAKE: Mixing up 'taking' with 'adding'. For example, if someone asks 'how many are left?', and you add the numbers instead of subtracting. | CORRECTION: Remember 'taking' or 'subtraction' is always about finding 'how much less', 'how much left', or 'the difference'. 'Adding' is about finding 'the total'.

Real World Connection
In the Real World

Every time you check your bank balance after making a UPI payment, you are seeing 'taking' in action. The amount of money you spent is 'taken' from your total balance. Similarly, when a delivery app like Swiggy shows 'X minutes remaining' for your food, it's constantly 'taking' from the total delivery time.

What to Learn Next

Now that you understand 'taking', you can move on to 'Adding (Logic Primitive)'. Adding is the opposite of taking, and learning it will help you understand how numbers combine and how to solve even more complex problems!
