What is The Concept of Times Table?

Grade Level:

Pre-School – Class 2

All domains without exception

Definition
What is it?

The concept of a times table, also known as multiplication table, is a list of results you get when you multiply a certain number by other whole numbers. It helps us quickly find the answer to multiplication problems without having to add numbers repeatedly.

Simple Example
Quick Example

Imagine you buy 3 packets of biscuits, and each packet costs ₹10. To find the total cost, you can use the 10 times table. Instead of adding ₹10 three times (10 + 10 + 10), you can simply multiply 3 x 10 to get ₹30.

Worked Example
Step-by-Step

Let's create the 4 times table up to 5:
1. Start with the number 4.
2. Multiply 4 by 1: 4 x 1 = 4
---
3. Multiply 4 by 2: 4 x 2 = 8
---
4. Multiply 4 by 3: 4 x 3 = 12
---
5. Multiply 4 by 4: 4 x 4 = 16
---
6. Multiply 4 by 5: 4 x 5 = 20
---
So, the 4 times table up to 5 is: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20.

Why It Matters

Times tables are super important because they are the building blocks for almost all advanced math. They are used by engineers to design bridges, by shopkeepers to calculate bills quickly, and even by game developers to create cool animations. Mastering them makes math much faster and easier.

Common Mistakes

MISTAKE: Confusing multiplication with addition, e.g., thinking 3 x 4 is 3 + 4. | CORRECTION: Remember that multiplication is repeated addition. 3 x 4 means adding 4 three times (4 + 4 + 4), not just once.

MISTAKE: Memorizing numbers without understanding the pattern, leading to mistakes when recalling. | CORRECTION: Understand that each step in a times table adds the original number. For example, in the 5 times table, each answer is 5 more than the previous one (5, 10, 15, 20...).

MISTAKE: Only learning up to 10x tables and struggling with larger numbers. | CORRECTION: The concept extends beyond 10. Once you understand the pattern, you can calculate 11 x 7 or 12 x 5 just as easily.

Practice Questions
Try It Yourself

QUESTION: What is 6 multiplied by 7? | ANSWER: 42

QUESTION: A auto-rickshaw covers 8 km in one hour. How many kilometers will it cover in 5 hours if it travels at the same speed? | ANSWER: 40 km

QUESTION: Your mom buys 9 boxes of laddoos for Diwali. Each box has 8 laddoos. How many laddoos are there in total? If you eat 5 laddoos, how many are left? | ANSWER: Total laddoos = 72. Laddoos left = 67.

MCQ
Quick Quiz

Which of these shows the 3 times table?

3, 6, 9, 11, 14

3, 6, 9, 12, 15

3, 5, 7, 9, 11

3, 6, 12, 18, 24

The Correct Answer Is:

B

Option B is correct because each number is 3 more than the previous one, showing repeated addition of 3. Options A, C, and D do not follow this consistent pattern of adding 3.

Real World Connection
In the Real World

From calculating how many samosas are needed for a party if each guest gets 2, to a shopkeeper quickly calculating the bill for 4 items costing ₹25 each, times tables are used daily. Even while playing games on your mobile, the scores and points are often calculated using multiplication.
