What is The Most Common (Mode)?

Grade Level:

Class 3

All STEM domains, Finance, Economics, Data Science, AI, Physics, Chemistry

Definition
What is it?

The Mode is the number or item that appears most often in a list or set of data. It tells us which value is the most frequent or common one in a group.

Simple Example
Quick Example

Imagine your favourite chai shop sells different types of chai. If they sold 10 cups of Masala Chai, 5 cups of Ginger Chai, and 10 cups of Cardamom Chai, then both Masala Chai and Cardamom Chai are the modes because they were sold 10 times each, which is the highest frequency.

Worked Example
Step-by-Step

Let's find the mode for the following cricket scores made by a batsman in 7 matches: 25, 30, 15, 25, 50, 25, 10.

Step 1: Write down all the scores: 25, 30, 15, 25, 50, 25, 10.
---Step 2: Count how many times each score appears.
---Step 3: Score 10 appears 1 time.
---Step 4: Score 15 appears 1 time.
---Step 5: Score 25 appears 3 times.
---Step 6: Score 30 appears 1 time.
---Step 7: Score 50 appears 1 time.
---Step 8: The number 25 appears most often (3 times). So, the Mode is 25.

Why It Matters

Understanding the mode helps businesses know which products are most popular, like which mobile phone model sells the most. In science, it can show the most common result in an experiment. It's used by data scientists and economists to spot trends and make smart decisions.

Common Mistakes

MISTAKE: Thinking the mode is the number that appears only once. | CORRECTION: The mode is the number that appears the MOST times, not the least or just once.

MISTAKE: Confusing mode with other averages like mean or median. | CORRECTION: Mode is about frequency (most common), while mean is the average (sum divided by count), and median is the middle value.

MISTAKE: Not finding all modes if there's more than one. | CORRECTION: If two or more numbers appear with the same highest frequency, then all of them are the modes. This is called bimodal or multimodal.

Practice Questions
Try It Yourself

QUESTION: Find the mode of these daily auto-rickshaw fares (in Rupees): 40, 55, 30, 40, 60, 40. | ANSWER: 40

QUESTION: A class recorded their favourite colours: Red, Blue, Green, Red, Yellow, Blue, Red, Green. What is the mode? | ANSWER: Red

QUESTION: Find the mode(s) of the following data: 8, 12, 10, 8, 15, 10, 9, 8, 10. | ANSWER: 8 and 10 (Both appear 3 times)

MCQ
Quick Quiz

What is the mode of the numbers: 7, 2, 5, 7, 3, 7, 1?

2

7

5

1

The Correct Answer Is:

B

The number 7 appears 3 times, which is more than any other number in the list. So, 7 is the mode.

Real World Connection
In the Real World

Mobile companies often use the mode to understand which data plan or smartphone model is most popular among customers. For example, if '1.5 GB/day' is the most chosen data pack, it's the mode, and companies will promote it more. Food delivery apps like Swiggy or Zomato might track the mode to see which dish is ordered most often in a city.

Key Vocabulary
Key Terms

FREQUENCY: How many times something appears | DATA SET: A collection of numbers or information | BIMODAL: When there are two modes in a data set | MULTIMODAL: When there are more than two modes

What's Next
What to Learn Next

Great job learning about the Mode! Next, you should explore the 'Median'. The Median also helps us understand data by finding the middle value, which is another important way to describe a group of numbers.
