When you're millions of miles from Earth, regular checkups with your doctor aren't exactly an option. That’s where the 'Acoustic Upgraded Diagnostics In-Orbit' experiment steps in. This project, led by Dr. Arturo Moleti from the University of Rome Tor Vergata, explores how sound can be used to monitor astronaut health in space.
Acoustic diagnostics involve analyzing the sound waves produced by the human body — from breathing to heartbeats — to detect abnormalities. In microgravity, where fluids behave differently and organs shift positions, traditional diagnostic tools can become unreliable. Acoustic methods, however, offer a non-invasive and efficient alternative.
This ESA-sponsored experiment enhances the diagnostic toolkit available on the ISS. Using upgraded acoustic sensors, researchers can monitor astronauts’ respiratory systems, ear health, and even cardiovascular function.
On Earth, these findings could improve telemedicine and help develop compact diagnostic devices for remote or underserved areas. In space, they’re a lifeline — offering real-time health data that can be critical in emergencies.
