Agnirva Space Premier League - Expedition #30033: Living Particles in Space: Exploring Active Colloids in Microgravity

Not all particles are passive — some move, respond, and interact actively with their environment. The 'Active Colloids in Microgravity' experiment studies these dynamic systems aboard the ISS. Led by Dr. Alicia Boymelgreen and Dr. Jarrod Schiffbauer, this research explores how active colloidal particles behave in the absence of gravity.

These particles can self-propel, sense gradients, or even mimic biological behaviors. In microgravity, where sedimentation and convection are eliminated, researchers can observe pure interactions among particles — vital for creating advanced materials and synthetic biological systems.

Applications range from developing smart drug delivery mechanisms to creating novel self-healing materials. Space Tango, a private research company, helped make this investigation possible by providing specialized hardware for space-based experimentation.

This study not only reveals fundamental physical insights but also pushes forward the field of nanotechnology and biomimicry.
