The experiment titled 'Anomalous Long Term Effects in Astronauts' Central Nervous System' seeks to unravel these mysteries. Conducted under the leadership of Dr. Livio Narici from the University of Rome Tor Vergata and supported by the Italian Space Agency and NASA, this study focused on understanding how long-duration spaceflight impacts the human central nervous system (CNS).
During Expeditions 13 to 15 on the International Space Station (ISS), the research examined how microgravity, cosmic radiation, and prolonged isolation influence neurological function. These environmental stressors in space differ significantly from those on Earth and may cause structural and functional changes in the CNS.
The study employed both in-flight assessments and ground-based comparisons. Using a mix of neurocognitive tests, behavioral analyses, and electrophysiological monitoring, researchers evaluated memory, attention, spatial orientation, and motor coordination.
