Amyloid aggregation plays a central role in diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. The experiment “Amyloid Aggregation,” conducted during Expedition 59/60 by the European Space Agency (ESA), investigates how amyloid proteins form in the absence of gravity. Principal Investigator Cristina Casalone, D.V.M., and her team from Italy aim to uncover how microgravity influences the kinetics and structure of amyloid fibrils.
On Earth, gravity affects how proteins move and interact. In microgravity, protein molecules diffuse more slowly, allowing scientists to observe their natural tendencies without sedimentation effects. This space-based experiment allows researchers to observe whether amyloid fibrils grow differently in space—perhaps more orderly or with different toxicities.
Initial findings suggest that microgravity promotes a slower but more organized aggregation of amyloids, potentially mimicking early disease stages. These results are essential for understanding the progression of neurodegenerative diseases and may inform new therapeutic approaches.
