Agnirva Space Premier League - Expedition #30296: How Spaceflight Changes Our Bodies: A Deep Dive into Biochemical Shifts in Astronauts

Living in space for extended periods is one of the most demanding challenges for the human body. The Biotest experiment, led by V. Noskov at the Institute for Biomedical Problems in Moscow, focuses on understanding these effects by closely monitoring the biochemical status of astronauts during long-term missions aboard the International Space Station (ISS).

This research, supported by ROSCOSMOS and conducted over numerous ISS expeditions (3 through 10), aims to map how prolonged microgravity and isolation impact human physiology at a molecular level. Scientists analyze blood and urine samples, track changes in enzyme activity, and observe the metabolism of proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids. These data help identify stress markers, hormonal shifts, immune system alterations, and nutritional needs in space.

One key outcome of Biotest has been the identification of specific biomarkers indicating oxidative stress and immune suppression during long missions. These insights are crucial for developing countermeasures to keep astronauts healthy on missions to the Moon, Mars, and beyond. Additionally, the findings have implications for medicine on Earth—especially in understanding how immobility or isolation impacts aging populations.

By decoding how our biochemistry adapts in orbit, Biotest contributes to creating safer, healthier environments for future space explorers and informs medical research here on Earth.
