Dust might seem like a minor player in Earth’s atmosphere, but it has profound effects on our climate, weather, and even human health. The Earth Surface Mineral Dust Source Investigation (EMIT), led by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, is a game-changing mission using the ISS to track and study dust sources on Earth in unprecedented detail.


EMIT uses advanced imaging spectroscopy to identify the mineral composition of dust sources across Earth's deserts and arid regions. These mineral particles can travel thousands of miles, impacting ecosystems, weather systems, and climate processes. For example, dust from the Sahara can fertilize the Amazon rainforest, but it can also affect air quality and glacier melting.


With long-term data collected across many ISS expeditions, EMIT helps climate scientists better model how dust interacts with sunlight and cloud formation. This contributes to refining global climate models and understanding long-term changes in Earth's environment. Additionally, the technology developed for EMIT is setting the stage for future Earth-observing missions.


By studying mineral dust from space, EMIT gives scientists a clearer picture of Earth's interconnected systems and helps us make informed decisions about climate policy and mitigation.
