Agnirva Space Premier League - Expedition #30731: Protecting Our Planet from Orbit: The Earth Guardian Initiative

How can astronauts become guardians of Earth from space? The European Space Agency’s Earth Guardian experiment set out to inspire the next generation of environmental stewards by blending education and orbital observation aboard the ISS.

In this program, students were encouraged to act as “Earth Guardians,” monitoring environmental changes on Earth as observed by astronauts and satellites. Through educational content and real-world applications, learners explored topics like deforestation, climate change, and urbanization.

The Earth Guardian experiment empowered students to take a closer look at their surroundings and relate it to satellite imagery. It demonstrated how human actions are visible even from orbit—changing coastlines, melting ice caps, and sprawling cities.

In parallel, ESA astronauts recorded their observations from the ISS, shared visuals, and engaged students in live discussions and Q&A sessions. This interactive approach helped foster a sense of responsibility among students about protecting our planet.

From comparing temperature anomalies to assessing cloud patterns, students developed skills in data analysis, critical thinking, and environmental science—all while connecting directly with those watching Earth from 400 km above.
