Staying healthy in space is one of the top priorities for astronauts. With limited medical resources onboard, early detection of health issues is critical. Enter EveryWear, a smart garment-based system developed by the European Space Agency (ESA) and MEDES (Institute for Space Medicine and Physiology) that monitors astronauts’ vital signs in real time.
EveryWear is essentially a wearable sensor system. It’s like a smart shirt that tracks heart rate, body temperature, sleep quality, hydration levels, and even movement patterns. The goal is to give scientists and flight doctors on Earth a constant, non-invasive way to monitor astronaut health without needing bulky equipment.
Tested across multiple expeditions (49/50 to 74), EveryWear’s data helped doctors understand how microgravity affects different aspects of human physiology over time. For example, sleep disturbances are common in space due to changes in circadian rhythm. EveryWear provided concrete data on sleep quality that researchers used to adjust lighting schedules and routines to improve rest.
The device also logged hydration status, critical for maintaining cardiovascular and kidney function in microgravity. Tracking hydration in real time allowed astronauts to adjust fluid intake before symptoms of dehydration or overhydration set in.
The beauty of EveryWear lies in its simplicity: it doesn’t interfere with daily tasks and feels like regular clothing. All data are transmitted wirelessly, meaning astronauts don't need to stop what they're doing to get a checkup. This approach improves both comfort and efficiency.
Beyond the ISS, EveryWear has potential back on Earth, especially for remote health monitoring, elderly care, and athletic performance. It represents the future of wearable tech, demonstrating how innovations developed for space can translate into everyday health solutions.
