Panasonic Corporation's Harumitsu Miyashita led an intriguing experiment aboard the ISS—exposing optical discs to the space environment to test their durability. This Optical Disc Space Exposure Project, carried out during Expedition 64, aimed to determine if commonly used digital storage formats like Blu-Ray could remain functional after months in orbit.
The discs were mounted on the ISS's ExHAM platform and exposed to UV radiation, cosmic rays, and temperature extremes. After retrieval, scientists evaluated their physical condition and data readability. The goal was to assess whether optical media could serve as reliable data storage options for long-duration missions, perhaps even for Mars-bound crews.
This research has practical implications not just for space exploration but for data archiving on Earth in extreme environments. The experiment provides insights into how consumer electronics might be adapted for use in space—a critical step for future manned missions where compact, lightweight, and durable tech is essential.
