Living in microgravity for months affects every system in the human body – especially balance and coordination. The 'Recovery of Functional Sensorimotor Performance Following Long Duration Space Flight' experiment focused on understanding and tracking this recovery process.
Led by scientists at NASA’s Johnson Space Center and Russia’s Institute of Biomedical Problems, the study involved astronauts from Expeditions 43 through 56. Upon return to Earth, astronauts often feel dizzy, unstable, or disoriented – symptoms of a disrupted sensorimotor system.
Researchers used specialized tests to evaluate posture, walking, eye movement, and head coordination. The data showed that while most astronauts recover within days, some require longer, depending on mission duration and individual differences. These insights help design rehabilitation programs and improve training for future missions.
This study is critical for upcoming long-duration missions to the Moon and Mars, where rapid adaptation post-landing could be vital for survival and mission success.
