The 'Fizika-Obrazovaniye' or Physics-Education experiments initiated by ROSCOSMOS offer a unique educational and scientific value. Among them, Fizika-Faza focuses on demonstrating key principles of physical laws and phase transitions in microgravity. The experiment spanned several expeditions (18 through 32) and allowed students on Earth to witness how classic physics behaves in space.
The core of Fizika-Faza involves demonstrations of physical processes such as fluid behavior, crystallization, and phase changes — all of which behave differently in the absence of gravity. For example, liquids don’t settle at the bottom of containers in space; instead, surface tension dominates, resulting in spherical droplets. Understanding these differences is crucial for designing fluid systems in spacecraft, from fuel tanks to water recycling units.
Beyond the technical gains, Fizika-Faza was an educational tool. It provided video recordings of these experiments, helping students visualize and better understand fundamental physics principles. This hands-on (or rather 'eyes-on') approach made abstract classroom concepts tangible.
By bridging the gap between space research and school curriculums, Fizika-Faza demonstrated how educational outreach can have a deep, lasting impact. Students not only learned about microgravity but also gained insights into experimental design and the broader scientific method — all set against the backdrop of the International Space Station.
