Agnirva Space Premier League - Expedition #30883: Future Engineers: Designing for Space, Powered by Students

Imagine designing something on your computer and seeing it printed in space. That dream became a reality through the 'Future Engineers – Two for the Crew' competition.

Spearheaded by Deanne Bell and powered by Made In Space, this NASA-sponsored educational initiative challenged students across the U.S. to design tools that could be 3D printed aboard the International Space Station (ISS). The theme: create something that astronauts could use to make life easier in microgravity.

The result? A wave of creativity from students in elementary through high school. Designs ranged from multi-tools to food preparation aids, each tackling unique problems faced in space. The winning designs were transmitted as digital files to the ISS and printed using the station’s onboard 3D printer.

This hands-on challenge connected students directly with space technology. It demonstrated how digital design and additive manufacturing are revolutionizing how we solve problems in space. More importantly, it inspired a new generation of engineers to dream big.

The program also emphasized iterative design, testing, and practical problem-solving—core aspects of any engineering career. By engaging with real aerospace constraints and receiving feedback from professionals, students got a true taste of the design process in action.

'Future Engineers – Two for the Crew' is not just a contest; it’s a launchpad for future careers in STEM. By putting students in the driver’s seat, it turns imagination into innovation.
