The International Space Station isn’t just a high-tech laboratory—it’s also home for astronauts during their missions. But what’s it really like to live there? That’s what the Habitability Assessment of the ISS set out to answer. This multi-expedition study, spanning from Expedition 43 to 52, focused on how astronauts experience the station’s living and working environment.
Led by Dr. Maya Greene and conducted by NASA's Human Research Program, the study examined crew feedback on lighting, temperature, privacy, and even social dynamics. The goal: understand what aspects support mental and physical well-being and what might need improvement, especially for longer future missions to Mars or the Moon.
Feedback was gathered via surveys, interviews, and observation logs. The results? Crew members appreciate the modular design and personalized workstations but highlighted a need for better sleeping quarters and more natural lighting. This research helps NASA design more habitable future spacecraft and even informs ergonomic designs for extreme environments back on Earth.
