Agnirva Space Premier League - Expedition #30941: Earth in 1080p: How the ISS Streams Our Planet in High Definition

Have you ever seen live footage of Earth from space? That’s thanks to the High Definition Earth Viewing (HDEV) experiment aboard the ISS. Led by Susan Runco and developed by NASA’s Johnson Space Center, this experiment placed commercial HD cameras outside the station to stream continuous video back to Earth.

Besides providing jaw-dropping views, HDEV tests how commercial camera systems perform in the harsh environment of space. These cameras face extreme temperature shifts, high radiation, and micrometeoroid impacts. Learning how they withstand these conditions helps engineers improve future satellite and spacecraft designs.

The video feeds from HDEV also inspire the public, particularly students, by offering a constant reminder of Earth’s beauty and fragility. It brings space exploration into classrooms and homes, nurturing the next generation of scientists and engineers.
