Space isn’t just for seasoned scientists and astronauts. It’s also a classroom—one that orbits Earth at over 17,000 miles per hour. The "Higher Orbits Multi Experiment Module #4" represents this spirit of inclusive, educational exploration. Spearheaded by Michelle Lucas and supported by Space Tango, this initiative empowers students to turn their scientific ideas into real experiments conducted aboard the International Space Station (ISS).
Higher Orbits is an educational nonprofit focused on STEM and space education. Through its programs, students from middle school to college collaborate to design experiments addressing real-world problems, ranging from material science to biology. The Module #4 mission marked the fourth time student experiments from the Higher Orbits program reached space.
The experiments developed for Module #4 varied widely but shared a common goal: to help students understand the scientific method, data analysis, and the effects of microgravity on various systems. Once aboard the ISS, these student-designed modules are activated in the CubeLab infrastructure, which maintains temperature, lighting, and data collection parameters—all automated for reliability.
These educational activities not only ignite curiosity and creativity but also produce real scientific data. Students get post-flight results to analyze and interpret, bridging the gap between theoretical learning and hands-on discovery. Such experiences can shape future engineers, astronauts, and innovators, planting the seeds for careers in aerospace and beyond.
