Space is not only physically demanding—it’s psychologically and hormonally challenging too. A long-term research project led by Dr. Alexander Choukèr at the University of Munich aims to understand how astronauts’ neuroendocrine and immune systems adapt to extended stays aboard the International Space Station (ISS).
The neuroendocrine system is the communication network between the brain and hormones, and it plays a critical role in managing stress, mood, sleep, and immune function. This experiment monitors changes in stress hormones like cortisol, immune responses, and their interaction over the course of months in space.
Using biological samples from astronauts on Expeditions 12 through 36, researchers studied fluctuations in hormone levels and immune markers before, during, and after spaceflight. The findings reveal complex shifts—like increased stress hormones, altered circadian rhythms, and suppressed immune function.
This suggests that microgravity, isolation, radiation exposure, and disrupted sleep patterns collectively challenge the body’s homeostasis (its internal balance). Understanding these changes is vital for developing strategies to safeguard astronaut health.
One intriguing outcome is the role of psychological stress in immune regulation. Prolonged exposure to confined environments affects not only the mind but also immune efficiency, leading to increased vulnerability to illness.
These insights help us better prepare astronauts for missions to Mars or other long-duration destinations. They also inform Earth-based health practices, such as managing stress in hospital patients or optimizing performance in extreme environments.
