The Immuno-2 experiment is a long-running study exploring how the human immune system adapts to extended stays aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Led by Dr. Alexander Choukèr from the University of Munich and backed by the European Space Agency (ESA), it spans numerous expeditions from 43/44 to 69.
Immune dysregulation is one of the top health concerns for astronauts. On Earth, our immune systems are constantly in action, defending against microbes and maintaining internal balance. In space, that system encounters microgravity, radiation, and stress—all of which can weaken immune responses.
Immuno-2 focuses on evaluating cellular and molecular immune markers. This includes T cell function, cytokine production, and stress-related biomarkers. The aim is to understand how immunity changes over time and how to maintain immune competence during missions that last months or even years.
The experiment involves pre-flight, in-flight, and post-flight biological sampling. Blood and saliva samples are analyzed for changes in immune cell populations, inflammation indicators, and gene expression related to immune function.
Findings show significant variations in immune response. Some immune cells become overactive while others diminish in function. These shifts may increase susceptibility to infection, impact wound healing, and influence long-term health.
This knowledge is key to building health protocols for deep-space missions. It also contributes to Earth-based medicine, especially in understanding chronic immune disorders, aging, and stress management.
Immuno-2 exemplifies how ongoing research in orbit can illuminate the complexities of human biology. It underscores the need for tailored countermeasures—such as exercise, nutrition, and possibly pharmaceuticals—to support astronauts on future lunar and Martian journeys.
