Space is a source of awe and wonder—and also a powerful tool for education. Japan’s "Educational Program for Schools to Inspire Next Generation," led by Principal Investigator Tsutomu Yamanaka from IHI Corporation, leverages the International Space Station (ISS) as a classroom beyond Earth. Sponsored by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), this initiative aims to connect students directly with space science through hands-on learning and remote participation.
Spanning several ISS expeditions—55/56, 63, 66, 69, and 71—this program includes interactive lessons, live sessions with astronauts, and student-designed experiments conducted in microgravity. For instance, students might submit ideas for simple physics experiments, which astronauts then perform aboard the ISS. The resulting videos and data are shared with classrooms, sparking curiosity and discussion.
The program covers a broad age range, from elementary through high school. It introduces young learners to key space concepts: gravity, life support, robotics, and sustainability. Perhaps more importantly, it fosters a sense of global participation and inclusiveness in space exploration.
This experiment demonstrates the value of education in space missions. It inspires future scientists and engineers by making them part of the journey. Students gain early exposure to the scientific process, space technology, and international collaboration.
