Agnirva Space Premier League - Expedition #31084: Talking to Space: How Ham Radio Connects Astronauts and Earth

Did you know students around the world can talk directly to astronauts in space? The ISS Ham Radio (Ax-1) experiment, led by Dr. Adam Sirek from Leap Biosystems, showcases how simple radio technology creates powerful educational moments.

Installed aboard the International Space Station during Expedition 67, this ham radio system allows astronauts to communicate with school groups, amateur radio operators, and enthusiasts across the globe. It’s part of a broader effort to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers.

Students prepare questions, coordinate with ground stations, and experience live conversations with astronauts. It’s more than just cool—it’s educational, teaching physics, communication technology, and the realities of life in space.

The Ax-1 mission expanded this program to commercial astronauts, highlighting how private missions can engage with public education. It’s a reminder that space exploration belongs to everyone, not just agencies or scientists.

Simple, accessible, and profoundly human, ham radio in space is a tool for global outreach. It connects people to the stars, one radio wave at a time.
