Agnirva Space Premier League - Expedition #31121: Connecting Space to Society: JAXA’s Public Relations Activity Bridges the Gap

The JAXA Public Relations Activity, led by Principal Investigator Kanae Shimizu, is a creative blend of education, outreach, and cultural exchange that brings the wonders of space closer to everyday people. Conducted during Expeditions 66 and 67 aboard the International Space Station (ISS), this initiative was a part of JAXA’s broader mission to foster public interest and support for space exploration.

Rather than focusing purely on technical or scientific objectives, the goal of this activity was to highlight the human aspects of spaceflight. Astronauts participated in video messages, cultural demonstrations, and Q&A sessions that were shared with audiences in Japan and beyond. These were crafted not only to inform but also to entertain and emotionally engage viewers.

By using social media platforms, television broadcasts, and educational events, JAXA managed to reach a broad demographic, including young students, families, and professionals with little to no background in space science. This initiative underscored the fact that space exploration is not just for scientists or engineers—it’s for everyone.

Special efforts were made to include Japanese cultural elements. For instance, astronauts wore traditional clothing, shared Japanese meals, and explained cultural artifacts—all from the weightless environment of the ISS. These acts served as a celebration of national identity and helped build a personal connection between astronauts and audiences on Earth.

This PR activity demonstrated that space missions could also serve as a medium for cultural diplomacy and education. It reminded us that the ISS is not just a hub for international science, but also for international understanding and collaboration.
