JAXA’s Public Relations Activity 15, led by Principal Investigator Kae Inaba during Expedition 72, showcases how communication and culture play vital roles in space exploration. This initiative used the International Space Station (ISS) not just as a science platform, but as a venue for cultural expression and public engagement.
Astronauts aboard the ISS took part in educational videos, interviews, and cultural showcases meant to deepen public understanding of life in space. This campaign went beyond simply explaining technology; it was about creating empathy and shared experience. Through visual storytelling and real-time connections with audiences, JAXA opened a window into the day-to-day realities of orbiting Earth.
Part of the project focused on “Space as a Classroom.” Videos were designed with students in mind and aligned with national curriculum topics. These included physics demonstrations, Earth observation insights, and personal reflections from astronauts.
Cultural expression was also central. Activities included celebrating traditional Japanese festivals on the ISS, sharing space-modified versions of Japanese cuisine, and explaining the significance of these traditions to a global audience. These acts of cultural diplomacy resonated with viewers, bridging the distance between space and home.
Public Relations Activity 15 showed that outreach is not just a side project—it is essential to building public support and interest in space missions. It humanizes astronauts and reinforces that space belongs to all of us.
