JAXA’s Education Payload Observation 3 (EPO 3) is an inspiring fusion of space exploration and cultural expression. Spearheaded by Shiro Matsui from Kyoto City University of Arts, this initiative aimed to capture the imagination of students and the public through art performed and exhibited in microgravity aboard the International Space Station (ISS).
Running during Expeditions 19/20, 21/22, and 23/24, the experiment introduced artistic elements into a scientific environment. The unique physical laws in microgravity enabled performances and artistic expression not possible on Earth, allowing artists to explore how their creations interact differently in space.
From sculpture floating in mid-air to visual arts reacting to movement without gravity, the experiment redefined what it means to create in space. It also emphasized the importance of creativity in inspiring the next generation of scientists and engineers by showing that science and art are not separate spheres but interconnected realms of human curiosity.
For students, this project highlighted the value of cross-disciplinary learning. It taught them that their dreams could extend beyond traditional academic boundaries and inspired a new wave of interest in space through cultural engagement.
