The fifth installment of JAXA’s Education Payload Observation series, EPO 5, continued to elevate space education through innovative artistic expression. Led by Shiro Matsui, this phase spanned several ISS expeditions—23/24, 25/26, and 33/34—showcasing a long-term commitment to cultural enrichment in orbit.
EPO 5 engaged astronauts in a variety of artistic activities. Sculptures, paintings, and performance pieces were created or displayed aboard the ISS, serving both as scientific experiments and artistic expressions. The pieces explored how absence of gravity alters our perception and physical interaction with art.
The educational outreach from EPO 5 extended to schools across Japan and beyond, encouraging students to submit art ideas and reflect on the possibilities of space-bound creativity. It wasn’t just about what art looks like in space, but how space transforms the artistic process.
By incorporating feedback from previous payloads, EPO 5 refined how artists and astronauts collaborate, resulting in more immersive and thought-provoking pieces. It gave students around the globe a lens through which they could dream bigger and think beyond traditional career paths.
