With the NanoRacks-Kentucky Space Test-1 and -3, students and researchers from the University of Kentucky, led by Dr. James Lumpp Jr., took on ambitious experiments in microgravity during Expeditions 23/24 and 25/26. In partnership with the Lowell Center for Space Science and Technology, this project aimed to test new technologies in the harsh conditions of space.
These payloads included electronics and materials testing, aiming to validate designs for future satellite systems. They tested how commercial off-the-shelf components behave in the radiation-heavy, zero-gravity environment of low Earth orbit. Data collected from the ISS helped refine future cube satellite designs and exposed students to hands-on spaceflight hardware experience.
This initiative proves that universities can play a vital role in advancing space tech, while also giving the next generation of engineers a launchpad for innovation.
