Mission Discovery doesn’t just stop at one success—it builds on it. The NanoRacks-Mission Discovery ISS Biomedical Experiments 3, carried out during Expedition 51/52, marked the third round of student-driven biomedical science experiments onboard the International Space Station.
Led once again by ISSET and the Lowell Center for Space Science and Technology, this mission saw students exploring even more advanced and ambitious questions about human health in space. The young researchers investigated topics ranging from tissue regeneration and bone density loss to the behavior of immune system cells in zero gravity.
Each experiment designed for this mission passed through strict selection and preparation phases. Students not only had to think creatively but also consider the complexities of conducting science in space: limited resources, tight space, time constraints, and astronaut safety.
The third iteration highlighted how much students can grow across missions. Returning participants improved their designs and hypotheses based on prior feedback, while newcomers brought fresh enthusiasm and ideas. The experience also allowed researchers to begin identifying trends and correlations across the series of student experiments.
More than just science, this program remains a beacon of possibility for students worldwide. It demonstrates that scientific discovery is within reach—even at the edge of space.
