Agnirva Space Premier League - Expedition #31688: Launching Innovation: UAPSAT-1 from Peru’s Alas Peruanas University Reaches for the Stars

UAPSAT-1, developed by students at Alas Peruanas University in Lima, Peru, is a shining example of how educational institutions can meaningfully contribute to space exploration. Launched during Expeditions 37/38 to the International Space Station (ISS), UAPSAT-1 is a technology demonstration satellite built to test the operational capability of small CubeSats in low Earth orbit.

This ambitious project reflects the hard work and vision of a dedicated team of students and faculty who aimed to create a functional satellite with real-world utility. UAPSAT-1’s main goal was to evaluate satellite hardware and communications systems under the challenging conditions of space. It was equipped with various sensors and a telemetry system that transmitted data back to ground stations in Peru.

Being part of NASA’s NanoRacks program allowed the satellite to be launched via the ISS, providing invaluable real-world experience for the student team. UAPSAT-1 served as a testbed for future educational satellite missions and inspired a generation of Peruvian students to pursue careers in aerospace and engineering.

The successful operation of UAPSAT-1 demonstrated not only the viability of student-built satellites but also the global accessibility of space research. It proved that with guidance, education, and determination, young scientists can overcome technological and financial barriers to participate in cutting-edge space missions.

This project also laid the groundwork for further collaboration between Latin American universities and international space agencies. As nations like Peru continue to develop their space infrastructure, the success of UAPSAT-1 provides a strong foundation to build upon.
