Agnirva Space Premier League - Expedition #31721: Crystal Clarity in Space: Studying Water-Based Crystal Formation in Microgravity

Crystals are everywhere—from table salt to snowflakes. But what happens when they form in space? The 'NanoRacks-Valley Christian High School-Formation of Crystals in Distilled Water in a Microgravity Environment' experiment investigated exactly that. This project, executed by Valley Christian High School students, sought to observe how crystals grow in pure water when gravity is no longer in the equation.

Crystallization depends on the orderly arrangement of molecules, and gravity can influence the flow and settling of these molecules. In space, with gravity removed, the growth dynamics change. Students were particularly interested in whether microgravity leads to larger or more symmetrical crystals. The results not only have educational value but could also inform industrial crystallization processes, including pharmaceuticals, where crystal structure can impact drug efficacy. This high school-led mission is a brilliant example of students conducting real-world science that contributes to broader scientific knowledge.
